carry each other…

Wanted to post about the work of Ekaterina Craftsova, she was one of the UNIDEE residents i worked with this year. This is her film “carry each other” about older people and their carers in Biella which she made during her 4 month stint with us. It is absolutely beautiful…

bamboo and united nations…

…so now the space that was studio to our artists is changing again, now we are deep into installation territory, as our open studio event takes place this Saturday…a challenging time i will admit…its not easy dealing with 15 individuals all trying to show…some are easier than others, but always at this time of year i feel a little like a one woman united nations…a  Kofi-Boutros-Ban Ki trying to resolve territorial and personal disputes…however it is always a learning experience…and in between there are nice moments…like Cai Weidong and his bamboo for his installation…with which he took over the studio for an afternoon…

urban exporation app…

Wanted to blog about Eduardo Cachucho. He is one of the residents here at UNIDEE, he is from South Africa and is an architect/graphic designer/artist.

Anyway, Eduardo is a bit of a techy genius and after a week or two he had already come up with a nifty little app that allows you to negotiate a town or city through a series of instructions whose interpretation is left up to you. He has refined that idea and come up with an app specifically for Biella (he is working on other cities). It is called Derivé – an urban exploration app. See some of the instruction cards here:

Dérive is a mobile application that aids a user in exploring their surroundings through the use of randomly drawn ‘task-cards’. These cards are refreshed every 3min creating a sense of urgency in the exploration for new objects, things, colours, people etc to follow, find, experience.
Influenced by the Drift Deck created by the Near Future Laboratory in 2008, Dérive allows a user to install the application to their phone and take the ‘cards’ with them wherever they are“. Eduardo Cachucho (Click here for relevant post on his site)

emilia telese über art proffessional…

It’s the 3rd year we have invited Emilia Telese, Italian born, UK based artist and professional practice expert to come to UNIDEE and run workshops on professional practice for artists. I really like her workshops, they are always concrete and useful and perfect for anyone having an art-organisational-crisis!

Emilia breaks down the reality for us as artists on necessary evils such as how to operate within the art system effectively when applying for funds/grants/project submission…She talks about fundraising and about the do’s and dont’s of a good artists statement, sounds simple but all my good intentions tend to go out of the window as soon as i start to write a statement. Some things to bear in mind…

A statement is NOT a bio, but instead the philosophy of your work
A statement is NOT a marketing pitch, no emphatic pitching please!
Avoid vague jargon and express your concept clearly (to quote E. T. no ” my work is about memory and identity” please!!!

Also for sure its a good idea for a few critical friends to pick at your statement before you send it off…

She also recommends “Career Suicide” Alistair Gentry

Incidentally and ironically i stumbled across  the “Arty Bollocks Generator“  a month ago, it automatically generates artists statements full of art jargon that say and mean nothing! anyone wanting a laugh should check it out…

Mind mapping as an exercise in visualising your art project holistically

lanificio…

Always have to blog after visiting the Lanificio (wool mill) Zegna in Trivero, even though i have been there a hundred times or more, it’s always a treat to visit the workings of a fully functioning wool mill, especially one that is 100 years old…We take the UNIDEE residents here to try to contextualise the area a little, as the textile industry defined the landscape we live in.

Very weird to see all the installations (also housed within the factory complex, see here) i designed for the HabitusZegna have been moved around. Spent 3 years of my life working on this, designing all the elements site specifically and in a kind of dialogue with one another, and now it’s all been changed…Some of it works quite well and some of it is not so great…kind of hurt a little to see it…

The Bacheca installation was created as a site specific mini archive. It was realised in proportions and forms that related to the architecture that surrounded and in dialogue with another in situ piece,  it now it has been moved one floor up and for me at least does not work so well…
