change of scene…

Bye bye scotland, bye bye beautiful forth rail bridge…

time for a change of scene. Am back in Biella (northern Italy) where i will be collaborating artist for the artists residence programme UNIDEE at the Fondazione Pistoletto.  A programme i did myself way back in 2004 which resulted in my living here for nearly 5 years actually making a living out of this art lark. Anyway, now i am providing artistic support for the 14 or so artists/designers/architects who will turn up during the next few days. I will also be setting up and authoring the official blog for the residence. Will post links as soon as am up and ready. I will also be keeping this blog running in tandem where i can be less formal and more candid about the whole experience…

Getting here: Its a bit of an “adventure”  getting from edinburgh to biella in one day, there are many connections and many possibilities to miss them, but for a change everything went smoothly…until my final stage on small regional train where my usual love/hate affair with italia began…with a jumped-up-pantry-boy of a conductor who took offence to my taking photos of the passing landscape,

It went something like this:

MADAM! he bellowed in his best grumpy italian…YOU CANNOT TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS FROM TRAINS IN ITALY…

i replied incredulously (and maybe a little sarcastically…) OF RICE FIELDS? IS THERE A LAW? (this is a very bureaucratic country but really???)

he replied THERE IS A LAW MADAM, YOU HAVE TO WRITE AND GET OFFICIAL PERMISSION TO TAKE PHOTOS ON TRAINS IN ITALY…NOW KINDLY PUT YOUR CAMERA BACK IN YOUR BAG!!!!!!!

It went on a bit longer but i will spare you the details, need i say more?….

Incidentally he spent the rest of the (very long) one hour trip, keeping an eye on me while i flashed the “v’s” at him every time he walked past (very mature i know…) which was very frustrating as there was an amazing summer thunderstorm going on and the clouds and the mountains and the landscape were just crying out to be shot…bahhhh!!!!
