in the courtyard of the university…

The Salone always does lots of flashy things in the courtyard in Milan’s Università Statale, but its a tough battle fighting with all that architecture…judge for yourselves:

…in yet another of the University’s courtyards Photosynthesis by Akihisa Hirataat, blurb below

Surface by Alessandro & Franceso Mendini

Big bags” by Patricia Urquiola for Missoni

Architect’s eye” by Speech Tchoban & Kuznetsov

A stainless steel sphere with LED system creates the image of a human eyeball that rotates to look upwards as well as ourselves. The iris changes colour and the pupil increases and decreases in size and in between all that, it fades in and out images and video of abandoned monuments of the Russian avant-garde…hmmm

…meanwhile outside i really liked this bar sign (even though an old man came out and glared at me for taking a photo!)…

The Cross by Electroboutique (Aristarkh Chernyshev and Alexei Shulgin)

The art work is by Russian artists Aristarkh Chernyshev and Alexei Shulgin at the Milan Salone of 2012 in the venue of Milan’s Università Statale. I just really liked the bored kids who decided to interact a lot with it. I must admit to really enjoying the inappropriateness of the situation…so i filmed it…see below:

Meanwhile in the Triennale, i really liked this little lego piece by Valentina Vannicola, part of “PinkVision – Art Science and Bricks”:

fuorisalone and potholes…

Across the iron bridge to the Tortona district of Milan. Am here for the annual occupation of Milan by all things design, otherwise known as the Salone…well am here for the Fuorisalone, the less official fringe which opens up spaces citywide to artists and designers to showcase their wares. I try to catch it every year…anyway the next lot of posts will be from here…

inclement weather hides mountains…

One of the best things about flying to north Italy is the view you get as you fly over the Alps at this time of year. I have made this trip many many times and these spiky, snow clad mountain tops never stop giving me a little thrill every time i see them…except this time, when for the first time in my travels, they were completely hidden by the weather… goddammit! Still there were some nice cloud formations as we approached Milan, providing the first glimpse of recently flooded rice fields that so characterise the Lombardy and Piedmont landscapes…

stop motion from photos taken from my htc phone…result not too bad

mini robots dance to thriller…

…happened upon this at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh…part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival…a formation dancing troupe of mini robots…enough said…oh and please forgive the poor quality of film, i was camera-less and had to use my phone. Check out how they sit down at the end of the first clip, it’s weirdly human…
