the advantages of having stealth around…

So as i always say, the best thing about residencies are the people you meet, some you like, some you hate, some you admire, some become friends, some you forget…etc etc. In this case am very happy that STEALTH.unlimited are going to be around on and off for the whole UNIDEE period, in a curatorial/advisory role for the UNIDEE residents…fresh minds and input are always good things… Stealth is made up of two architects Ana Džokić and Marc Neelen who carry out multidisciplinary projects often within an art context and often also act in curatorial roles. Their biography refers to them as “protagonists pointing to the responsibilities and capacities of architecture in contemporary societies, and acts between the fields of artistic research, spatial interventions, curation and cultural activism”…phew!!! Well all i can say is that their web site has some very interesting projects. [Cut for Purpose]

The Cut for Purpose project, developed in a collaboration with the Stadsredactie (The City Editorial Board) of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, examines how urban dynamics can find their way to the museum space. To imagine anew the potentials and role of a particular museum space, a temporary inversion of its 660m2 has been made.

From February 18 until April 23, 2006, a grid of more than man-sized cardboard panels has filled this entire part of the Museum. Within this structure, during a course of nine weeks, spaces have been purpose-cut to house a/o an office space for a writer, residency space for an art collective, a workshop for a product designers, a video room, a sound room, a meeting space, a garden, a film set…

The activities have established a series of spatial interactions based on a set of guidelines for the creation of spaces given to the participants – as well as a challenge of the relations between curators, participating artists and the different audiences.

[structure]

Cut For Purpose is an exploration made through a spatial structure and a transformative process set within it. The structure installed is a device; a testing tool on a 1:1 scale, that invites a line of activities to respond spatially and programmatically. It is a volume, comprised of a grid of 2000 cardboard sheets (283 x 120 x 1.5 cm), covering 1100m3. MDF ‘combs’, have been specially designed to keep honeycomb cardboard apart on 15 centimeters intervals.

Without having a spatial layout made in advance, the excavation of the space by the activities taking place within it is set-off by a few simple spatial guidelines. Each week, a volume of cardboard available for cutting is released and divided amongst the activities that are in immediate need of (extra) space; no reservation for a specific location can be made before an activity takes place; the structure is subject to time zones that allow for a specific duration for an activity; the material cut out transforms into interior elements – temporary seats, chairs, podia. Because of arrest of the previous tenant a unique space in the installation Cut for Purpose is released. […] Deafness is a pre. In the Street Gallery ongoing sawing is taking place. Non-the-less, even if you hear well, you are invited to react. The technical department of the museum has a large collection of Kema approved headphones at disposal. The office space is available until the 22nd of April, and is accessible seven days a week from 9 to 17h.”

Guardare se stessi guardarsi (Watching yourself watching yourself) by Masbedo

Went to an art show at an old factory space on the road to Oropa, it’s only about a 3 km walk there from Cittadellarte, but up a very steep slope. Takes about 40 minutes to get there. I go with most of the UNIDEE residents and i think we surprise a lot of drivers who are not so used to seeing a dozen or so pedestrians making their way up this winding road with no pavement…but we all survive in tact. Anyway, it’s worth it for the space alone…all crumbling walls and pillars…perfect for video projections though in the end the art often takes second place to such imposing architecture…

The show is called Paraphernalia and is produced by IDEA (which in italian stands for “Industry Dedicated Essentially to Art) which was founded in 2009 by Luisella Zignone and Ferdinando Botto Poala

meeting michelangelo…

So Michelangelo (Pistoletto) meets the residents he is hosting for the next 4 months and gives them a bit of a tour of some of his works. I have seen and heard this talk many times before but it is kind of incredible how he manages to keep things “fresh” and generally there is some little nugget of new information, but i guess for me the most enjoyable thing is watching other peoples reactions to him and of course also watching a true old pro at work…

biella again again…

…sometimes i feel like my life is a bit like groundhog day, in that i keep living the same situations over and over again…with that in mind, am back in Biella again…again working for the UNIDEE artists residency (which i myself participated in, in 2004) for 4 months as collaborating artist on staff, running the official blog (link to be posted soon) and also coordinating the final exhibition/open studio (yikes!!!). So we are a skeleton staff this year but lets see how that goes. So far so good, i think we have a great group of artists to work with…keep watching this space…

Took some of the group along Gorgomoro where you can swim if you like in clear but chilly mountain water. The woods are green, green GREEN with the most beautiful light…after it rains you can find the most incredible mushrooms  (see this previous post).

galician wild flora…

Walking in the countryside, i bump into a neighbour who asks why i bother to bring my camera as there is nothing much round here…how wrong can you be!! This is just a fraction of what i saw… i couldn’t identify everything but i could revel in the extraordinary beauty of some of these wild plants that i found in the province of La Coruña, Galicia..

Not such a common sight these days, this is old-school Galician rural planing, small fields contained by natural fencing made from thorny, creeping plants

the exquisite Linaria Triornithophora (three bird toadflax), looks like some kind of exotic orchid…

Asphodelus Albus (white asphodel) – ancient Greeks associated it with death apparently…
