a spot of gardening…

This is a really nice school project. The kids (divided by classes) have become responsible for small plots of land, where they sow, tend and harvest vegetables to be used for their meals.  I can view this first hand as in Butterfly Hill school, the plots are just beside my classroom. They must weed and water 2-3 times a day. In the mean time they get a practical lesson in horticulture, sustainability, consumption and responsibility. They are growing leafy veg like spinach, tomatoes, lady fingers/okra…all kinds of stuff…you can see from the photographs how quickly things grow here…

So we are waiting for Santa to arrive. Here in this particular corner he arrives on Semi Christmas (yes that’s right!) we celebrate Semi Christmas on the 23rd… Anyway things take a different turn this year as Santa adopted a new form of transport…

P1160925Eventually however he adopts the more familiar transport of the ox and cart…

Bhavani Deekshas watch on…obviously they are not celebrating christmas…who knows what they are thinking of all this. A lot of villagers come out to watch Santa parade around the village…and the kids like all kids, scramble for the sweets that are tossed in the air…

raju’s small masterpiece…

I always show my students how to make a small 7 page booklet by folding (and making one small cut) an A4 sheet of paper. I give them book each to take away with them and they can do what they like with them, but there is no obligation or theme. The kids who are really keen usually bring me the books back filled with small drawings. This year i got some absolute beauties back. Tiny masterpieces page after page.

Raju amazed me with this tiny tale of Eaga (telegu for fly)…who hates “man” – it is FANTASTIC!!!!!

The whole saga ends with Man in the cinema watching “Eaga” the movie…GENIUS!

Another beautiful book by Raju:

No narrative this time, just pure design, the kids often return to the same motifs here; the peacock, the lotus flower, the paisley…but remember these books are really tiny, the detail and execution are really impressive.

Rakesh is observing a Deeksha of 41 days dedicated to the God Ayyappa…these days are a kind of penance where the participants live a very reduced and spartan life, the idea being that at the end you are physically, mentally and spiritually stronger. Rakesh tells me no women are allowed in this kind of Deeksha except for old women (???!!!) Apparently Ayyappa was a single God and he did not like women…hmmmmmm
