upgrades like buses and a lot of food…

P1090347

Hmmm…seems like upgrades are a bit like buses, you wait your whole life for one to come and then a whole bunch appear, one after the other! So BA London to Hyderabad am upgraded to Business Class…!!!!  This really is very good news. No sleeping on the flight though as i don’t like to miss out on the experience…there is food to be eaten and drink to be drunk!…

P1090345

However, am on my way to my usual stint at the Andrha Pradesh orphanage, so too much free booze seems unseemly but the odd Kir Royale is most welcome (especially as i won’t be drinking for the next few months).  Movie is Man Up btw.

Then the food starts to arrive…

P1090351lamb with caraway and onion braised rice, stuffed baby pepper and stroganoff sauce

P1090354light and dark chocolate cheesecake with raspberry compote

P1090358Movie is Love and Mercy (loved it)

Think am supposed to sleep now.

After a brief respite it’s time for more food, to the point where am feeling a bit queasy…but i keep saying yes to whatever comes along. Greedy. Lighting very low now hence all the grainy photos…

P1090361

Breakfast is served an hour or so before landing, about 4.00am Indian time but it’s around 10.30pm my time and i think this is my 5th meal of the day…like i said. Greedy.

Landed…phew…with a few hours stopover in Hyderabad and then a short flight with Air India to Vijayawada…and another small snack…

flying and the humidity of other climes…

Time for a change of scene…am flying to India to work on art labs i run for children and young people there. See here to check out the previous years work. Am happy to be going, Edinburgh is dark, rainy and freezing and my stubborn refusal to waste what precious little money i had on something as mundane as a heating bill means staying at home would involve one longgggg, colddddd winter!

good views flying over London

…airline food, i know i shouldn’t but i kind of like it…:

lamb saag for dinner…

masala uttapam for breakfast…

Am going to near Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, which involves a flight from Edinburgh to London, then London to Hyderabad and then a small propeller plane (JET, as sadly my usual Kingfisher flight has gone under…hope the beer still exists!) from Hyderabad to the tiny tin pot airport of Vijayawada.

Normally i arrive to a blistering heat that hits you like a wave, but this time i left in the rain and arrive in the rain…but to tropical rain, we just caught the tail end on some typhoon and humidity is around 100%…nice…my hair is just loving that…Flooding is not nice in rural India…it brings up all sorts of nasty stuff to the surface…literally…and me with flip flops and a pair of trainers…to be continued…

unexpected upgrades…

For sure it’s never easy for me to leave India…and each time it gets harder…but as i checked in at 4.00am in Hyderabad for a 11 and a half hour flight to Heathrow and the stewardess said these magic words ” We are just going to upgrade your seat to World Class to make your journey more comfortable Madame…”, well i experienced a moment of pure, superficial, shallow and unadulterated joy and had to restrain myself from leaping over the counter to kiss her…

What you get with BA Club World:
Fully extendable seat where you can lie completely prone if you wish…

A little washbag with Elmis goodies, better socks and a nice quilted blanket…

Drinks (including champagne and cocktails as and when you wish) – i admit to taking full advantage of this… Hot towels on tap…Food and drink served course by course on china plates and in glass with real cutlery:

breakfast just keeps coming, muesli, pastries, Indian dosa (a spicy savoury crepe) and upma (a savoury porridge)…

A bigger TV screen…

To be honest i landed kind of exhausted as i so did not want to miss the experience of the upgrade (never happened to me before) that i deliberately slept very little…here is hoping it happens again!

the journey…

Am in Medelin!! Lord of the rings style journey to get here…24 hours in all:

Just to leave Biella was hard, they cancelled my train…Then a delightful overnight stay in Linate airport to catch the red eye to Paris. In Paris airport they exploded an unattended bag using a robot…they did not tell us they were doing so…they just stopped us walking around for a bit…needless to say we were somewhat traumatised by the LOUD, unexplained explosion…Then an 11 hour flight to Bogota…

(gratuitous shots of airline food)

…then you have to pick up all your baggage, put it through customs, re-check in amid chaos and a LOT of people…and then finally you can board your final flight to Medellin…

The flight between Bogota and Medellin is wonderful, you see the the mountainous fertile landscape of Colombia all the way…

(leaving behind the urban sprawl of bogota)

I land exhausted and disorientated…i ate may dinner at 9 am for god’s sake!!! I finally come out of arrivals and no one is there to meet me…i have a minor internal freak out as i realise that A. i don’t know where i am going, B. If i did l know i wouldn’t know how to actually get there, C. Neither my Italian nor British cells work in Colombia and D. i have no Colombian pesos to use a public phone…arghhhhh

A nearby guard takes pity on me (thank god i can speak Spanish) and gives me coins to use the phone and shows me how to use the phone (i am too stupid from sleep deprivation to work this out) RESULT! my friend is waiting for me at the airport, he is just at a different part. He turns up and the guard who helped me glares at him unimpressed..!We drive through hairpin bends for 40 minutes to reach the basin of Medellin, sunset and home for the next few weeks…

arrival…

…so five hours sleep in Hyderabad airport and then back on a plane, this time a short 1 hour to Vijayawada…

Kingfisher propeller plane – small but comfy, i now fly over familiar territory as we follow the Krishna River towards Vijayawada…can’t take many photos as am not supposed to…

am offered a cheese scone (?) sandwich, which is nicer than it looks…

…and i am met again as i was last year by little girls bearing flower garlands.

So nice this time every thing is familiar, i know people, remember the children, they remember me…I arrive in the orphanage and promptly fall asleep for HOURS. I wake up and for at least 20 seconds literally have no clue where i am…feel a bit like Alice in Wonderland…

…incidentally this is what 5 hours sleep in 48 hours looks like…with garland…
