behind the laptops…

…with every residence you become aware of certain moments that will remain as images or memories of that particular period of time. This picture for me is absolutely one of those moments. Ilaria and Richard work crazy hours every day, long into the night but still manage to be an integral part of everything…and be nice to everyone… for sure i will always have this image of them both, heads appearing from behind laptop screens, immersed in their work but still part of the conversation…

what happened in La Pigna…

So back to my art residency shenanigans…UNIDEE became UNIDESCO for our one week stay in La Pigna, Sanremo, this August (20-27). A kind of week-long performance/odyssey…we were a group of 16 and operated as an art collective experimenting with a democratic process led methodology…Phew! We worked on this project with STEALTH.unlimited were also greatly helped by a previous workshop with Borut Šeparović. So i will go into more detail about the work in general in the next few posts and what we actually did there, but for now you can look at the film below which is a visual record of some of the things that happened…

selection processes…

So am here at the Fondazione Pistoletto again for a number of different reasons,

one of them being that i am helping to select artists for this year’s UNIDEE in residence. Not an easy job going through all those applications trying to make a decision, especially when you know an acceptance can really change the path of someone’s life like it did with mine…or not of course! And then the other thing is that no matter how good an application is on paper, you have no idea what is going to happen until people actually arrive and start to interact with each other…It can be great, it can be terrible, it can be indifferent…we will just have to wait and see…

seasonal insomnia

…i am tired, every morning i wake up bang on 6.06 am..without fail no matter what time i go to sleep at night. Last year it was a regular 5.58 am awakening so at least i have gained 8 minutes on last year. And it can also be tiring to work in such a “complex” art institution (the internal politics in this place could give Machiavelli a bad name…!) but there is good stuff too,  some great proposals of work from the residents (will post more when their projects further along), a lot of nice new people, lunch today here in Biella up in the Circolo del Piazzo,  of steak and salad underneath the the shade of growing grape vines, Sunday afternoon spent in a hammock in the roof of some friend’s house (those Colombians really know how to relax…) and that is a vuvuzela in the bottom photo by the way…
