what happens when you leave art out in the rain…

A while back i posted about a work by Mimmo Paladino called “La Montagna di Sale” – “The Salt Mountain”  (see here) which involved some horses and a giant mountain of salt. I wondered what would happen to it if it rained…well i have my answer…

Much of the now dirty salt has been washed away by weeks of torrential rain revealing the underlying tiered wooden structure of the “mountain”…The work has shrunk considerably in size, the pristine salt is now a dirty brown and its disappearance reveals that a lot of the horses have not been buried in the salt but are in fact just sections placed on top of it…in other words the illusion is shattered… not to worry, i noticed sacks of salt in the corner, so i guess it is going to be revived…

before…after

…and speaking of rain, there was a thunderstorm imminent when i was in the town centre, managed to catch it as it hovered (“omen” style) over the Duomo di Milano…

shock corridor…

Experiencing Giovanni Anceschi’s “Environment with luminous shocks” a work from 1964. One of the installations in the new Museum of 20th Century Art in Milan.

Italian art of the 20th Century, a lot of it Milanese. Occasionally during this century Italy was truly at the vanguard of contemporary art, namely with the Futurist and Arte Povera movements but otherwise it is full of works that look a bit like other peoples work in other parts of the world. Beautiful building though…and great views…

chi chi designer store 10 Corso Como where you can pay thousands of euros for posh handbags and frocks and hundreds for designer “adult toys” – incidentally i got into trouble for photographing these…

…meanwhile in the city you can buy deep fried delicacies…and contrary to advertising, round the front of the van everyone was thankfully fully clothed…

…and hare krishnas roam the city making me feel like i am an extra in an 80’s Ridley Scott movie…

…and the duomo glows rosy pink n the late summer sun…

twinning…

… i got to thinking about some crazy/extreme religious types i have “experienced” in the last few weeks, and i decided decided to twin this pair of local “characters”, they have a lot in common…

separated at birth…by some water and some very big mountains:

He stands outside a small church near the duomo in the centre of milan (have mentioned him before) and he is not a communist because he is a “believer”, his only mission seems to be seen as he does not generally ask for anything…

His spiritual cousin instead has a beat in the heart of Edinburgh and can regularly be seen parading up and down Princes St of a weekend…(actually i think there is also another older chap who does the same thing, but is especially keen on extolling the dangers on non marital sex) have been wanting to film him for years, still have not managed it.

no entry…
