salone miscellany…

Lixil “a new desire” installation was a lot of fun and also contained a bath that constantly created its own bubbles…mercifully there were no “models” in bikinis (it does happen sometimes…still…)

look they are all wearing black…must be curators!

…also fun as it’s free drink (what’s not to like) Ltd edition Heineken bottle made from aluminium, changes colour and design depending on ambient lighting.

getting lost in ventura, lambrate…

grafitti in lambrate

Ventura, Lambrate are areas in Milan – a bit less central than the rest of the Fuori Salone, but there is still a lot of stuff there. Actually there was a lot of controversy around the decision to give Ikea a gi-normous warehouse space in the area to “present” their new collection…which looks pretty much like any Ikea store really….WHATEVER…I ignore them and pursue potentially more interesting stuff…getting lost a lot on the way.

Face to face by Brian Fransten

I tend to like carpets used in art, think it’s the best place for them, hate them on the floor…here danish carpet manufacturer Ege carpets teamed up with designer Brian Brandsen to create this three dimensional carpet excavation/drawing… face to face.

in the forest…

As ever am a sucker for sheer spectacle, and throw in a bit of state of the art technology and that will do nicely for me, so i was happy to spend some time just looking at shiny, flashy things in the canon installations for  “In the Forest”:

“Fall in pop” by Mintdesigns, Nobuhiro Shimura and LUFTZUG

Fall in Pop is made up of 3D screens made from draped fabric in which motifs are projected, filling the space with light and colour. The sculptural form is meant to give the feeling of waterfalls as images trickle down the textile.

Also part of In the Forest – Japanese architect Ryuji Nakamura and imaging artist Nobuhiro Shimuraa are responsible for ‘spring‘, a cube-like matrix structure made-up of piano wires which are arranged in a lattice format. Images are projected on the floor:

salone spaces…

Best part of the Salone di Milano is getting into spaces that are not normally available to you or getting to nosy into shops that normally are way too chi chi for the likes of me!

Beautiful In the Forest matrix multimedia installation by Canon, more on this in a later post…

“Growing vases” reflecting their surroundings by Nendo -metal pipes used by glassblowers left in place, so the light becomes the bulb and the pipe the flower…

From tasteful white surroundings to the über eclecticism (and over pricedness) of Rossana Orlandi’s store in the Magenta area:

Yes my friends, those are stuffed tapestry animals for hanging on your wall, the stuff of nightmares, but rather magnificent in their awfulness (and ridiculously expensive by the way…).

giants among beautiful micro worlds…

Tortona graffiti above still in the macro world, but i’m on my way to the Triennale to see more of the Salone…

Now i really love a good architectural maquette me, so i spent a lot of time in the Triennale at the Repower (swiss power company) and Italo Rota (milanese architect) exhibition. In the following photos you see models relating to our relationship with energy, conveyed via architecture, technology and the environment… and they are brilliant!!!

…of course there is an Italian element here, so there are an inordinate number of tiny female models in even tinier bathing suits…but isn’t the plastic water good??

Did i mention i love these things?…these quiet, intimate little spaces…obviously am missing the whole point of the exhibition…too busy obsessing over these models…oh well…off to read something more…

GIANTS among the microworlds!!, more maquette photos in my flickr here
