inclement weather makes for better photography…

There is just something about inclement weather and the seaside…maybe it’s just me, but everything looks so much better… These shots were taken at Tyninghame beach about half an hours drive outside Edinburgh. Nobody there except for us and one very hardy fisherman…

That’s the Bass Rock in the distance being enveloped by the weather, a volcanic plug in the Firth of Forth, it was a prison in the 17th century. I read that prisoners used to be executed by fixing a fish to their head so that a diving gannet would pierce the skull…not sure about the veracity of this however… Now it is now protected bird sanctuary.

Apparently, when they are biting he catches flounder and sea bass…

shopping and the weather…

The weather is MENTAL here, its very warm but it rains most days or nights, big crazy ass thunderstorms that come in from the surrounding mountains with incredible cloud formations … so beautiful…

…it really looked like this, i have not tampered with this picture…

Meanwhile shopping is an interesting experience…around Medellin and a lot in Moravia you can’t always go in, instead you stand outside behind thick iron bars while someone serves you from within…

general store

…a lot of people convert the front of their homes into tiny stores, this is a miniature liquor store under someone’s stairwell…

…this place sells bread and cheese…

…the drugstore…

…but there is a lot of beauty in these little stores, mainly from the hand painted ads painted at the entrances…

EL ANGELITO – LOVE LIFE AND WHAT YOU DO

madonna blu/madonna rosa…

…Speaking of Oropa, when i go there, i tend to buy one of these small statues every year.

This wee madonna turns out to be a rather brilliant predictor of the weather. When it is sunny and/or dry, she is blue as above…and when rain comes…like today…

…she turns pink (when i take her home to Scotland she remains mostly pink…!). Works every time…honest!

meteorology of a walk…

I always say, you don’t come to Scotland for the weather…take last Saturday for example, a lovely day for here around 20 odd degrees, look, that is actually the sun, you can see it lighting up the Scottish parliament. There it is hiding beneath turf landscaping behind the dandelions or are they goats beard??? should have checked for that tell tale hollow stem (see previous post)  and buttercups…

…and there is the castle doing the same thing, but oh oh, where has the sun gone???

never mind, even the animals are performing for the camera…and he can relax, rook eating season is over…

so anyway, knew it was too good to last, that’s THE WEATHER you can see rolling in from fife over the forth…i took it as my cue to get down off the mountain…

…and sure enough, twenty minutes later…

more rice…

Following on from the previous post and still in the landscape surrounding Biella; late spring and early summer the watery rice fields transform into green, green, GREEN…that moves in the wind, until eventually come harvest time late summer/autumn again  the landscape will change  to golden brown.

driving through the green green rice fields with storm approaching…

Biella is surrounded by the Alps in water filled plains, what goes up must come down and does so in the form of intense thunderstorms…

crossroads in the middle of the rice fields with a storm brewing…

After the rice is harvested, there is one final transformation as the the stubby stalks left in the ground are burnt, and the golden brown fields are hatched with giant strokes of charcoal black until it all disappears again into brown earth fields waiting for spring and the water to come again…
